WHAT IS A CRITICAL INCIDENT?

Any event that has a stressful impact sufficient enough to overwhelm the usually effective coping skills of an individual or group of individuals. Critical incidents are typically sudden, powerful events, which are outside the normal range of human experiences. Due to the suddenness and unusual nature of the these incidents, they can initiate a strong emotional effect even on well-trained professional emergency responders.
